5 Easy Ways to Go Green

By Rob Madden - Posted on 01 June 2010

Many of you that know me well enough know that my belief about green is that it doesn't have to be drastic, traumatic, or life changing (if you don't want it to be).  Rather, I believe in the little things that you can do that add up..."The Power of One as a Collective".

If you are ready to start small and simple, follow these 5 steps to green up your life a little:

  1. Stop buying bottled water and use filtered water in a reusable bottle.  Each year, Americans use approximately 70 million bottles each day with over 60 million of those ending up in land fills.  Only about 17 percent of plastic water bottles are recycled each year.
  2. Change your light bulb to a compact flourescent light bulb (CFL).  The cost savings on these bulbs is instant since they use almost 75% less energy than a regular incadescent bulb, especially since most utility companies provide financial incentives to retailers to sell these bulbs at reduced price.
  3. Get off of junk mail lists.  Vist http://www.41pounds.org or http://www.obviously.com/junkmail/ for more information on how to stop advertisers from sending needless mail that wastes paper.
  4. Buy locally.  Visit farmer's markets or join a food co-op.  More information can be found at http://www.localharvest.org or http://www.bountifulbaskets.org
  5. Do full loads of laundry and set the water temperature to cold.
